National Poison Prevention Week 2020

DETROIT-The Michigan Poison Center (MiPC) at Wayne State University School of Medicine will be celebrating National Poison Prevention Week 2020 (NPPW 2020), March 15th through March 21st. Poison centers throughout the country work with schools, businesses, healthcare facilities, and other public interest constituents to raise awareness about poison prevention and poison-related issues that affect communities and individuals across the nation.

The MiPC is staffed by Specialists in Poison Information (SPIs) and Toxicologists. Our SPIs and Toxicologists provide expert guidance to healthcare providers, caregivers, and victims of poisoning emergencies 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Specialists at the MiPC will speak with any caller who may have a poisoning emergency.

Many people who call the MiPC are uncertain if they really require our services. Callers quickly discover that they are interacting with medical professionals. Our SPIs are physicians, pharmacists, and nurses who are trained to help all callers with any poisoning emergency.  Some of the most common calls to the MiPC are about marijuana and CBD use, opioid abuse, accidental medication exposures, exposure to cleaning products, household exposures, and workplace chemicals, along with any other common substances found in homes, schools, and businesses. As healthcare professionals we also assist state and federal agencies with surveillance of emerging drugs of abuse and health risks, including coronavirus (COVID-19).

Assisting callers with poisonings and poison-related issues remains our primary focus and passion at the MiPC. We are also deeply committed to our underlying mission of education. Toxicologists with the MiPC train physicians, pharmacists, and nurses who work in healthcare facilities throughout Michigan. Educators with our Community Education Outreach Program offer poison prevention presentations to the public at schools, fairs, and other facilities throughout the state.
